What is the weirdest thing you ever ate? I can eat almost everything as my big frame can attest, but there are limits to even my gluttony. I realize that foods that one eats and enjoys are culture based and the love of sushi, kimchi, and a rare steak are cultivated based on where you were raised, but some things are just plain disgusting (at least to my plebian brain).
Here are my choices for the 10 Weirdest Things That People Eat:
"Squid Ink Ice Cream -- If the idea of Squid Gut ice cream seems unpalatable, perhaps this Squid Ink flavor is more of a tentacled taste-bud tantalizer."See it here.
"Purplo's, The Honey Cocktail Sausage Made from beef and mutton which is mildly flavoured with spices and added honey, filled into a narrow 22mm Purple casing and cooked. To be served piping hot." See it here.
"We don’t know about you, but the first thing we think when we catch a cockroach skittering across a kitchen floor? CHOCOLATE. In fact, there’s no grub worm, slug, or grasshopper we wouldn’t like to see smothered in the gooey good stuff. Now there’s some good-eatin’. How about you?" See it here!.
"Made from, raw cane sugar, wild Madagascan vanilla essence, and ground natural pearls. Pearl is said to be an aphrodisiac so why not spice up your love live or give it to someone as a subtle hint."See it here.
"Made from coffee beans that are regurgitated by weasels. The beans are then harvested (picked up) to make this fine flavoured coffee."See it here.
"Real Californian King Snake whiskey is infused with a farm real farm raised Real Californian King snake, ginseng roots and seed pods. The whiskey is left for several months, which then imparts a unique flavour into the whiskey, it is quite an acquired taste. The story is that this is used in SE Asia as a very strong Aphrodisiac; and it also has many medical uses..." See it here. Also Scorpion and Snake wine.
"Weaver Ants eggs a highly prized delicacy in Thailand. Weaver ants produce their eggs only once a year during the cooler months December to January, during this time, the time consuming, and sometimes painful task, of collecting the eggs take place, they are then wrapped in bannana leaves and sold on local markets. These eggs are huge! Some pieces are egg-shaped; others are almost shaped like ants, they have a soft and jelly like texture. The eggs have a creamy and nutty flavour and are commonly served in spicy salads; they can also be served on toast and even taste great served on tortilla chips. Our bottles of preserved weaver ants eggs contain over 200 eggs, they need to be cooked before serving." See it here.
"Yes, worms for your snacking enjoyment in three mouth-watering flavors: BBQ, Cheddar Cheese. and Mexican Spice. Packed with vitamins, minerals, and dirt, experience the amazing taste sensation of roasted larvae.... just kidding about the dirt.... these are very clean larvae, except of the sprinkling of spices..."See it here.
"These large and powerful insects are as adept at swimming as they are at flying. Eaten as a delicacy and found in Thai and Chinese markets, these insects bear the nickname toe-biters and are capable of inflicting a painful stab with their sharpened front beak. These bugs feed on other aquatic insects, tadpoles and even small fish, injecting them with a powerful toxin and digestive juice that allows the bug to suck up the contents at will. They are also known for their snorkel-like breathing tubes at the end of their abdomen. Eating instructions; Remove exoskeleton and then eat everything except the head and legs, try dipping them in your favourite sauce and enjoy!" See it here.
Ok, to be honest, I have not tried any of these items but just the idea of them makes me want to puke. Do you agree? What is the weirdest thing you ever ate? What is something you've been offered but refused to try?

Submitted on June 2nd, 2006 by Samson (not verified)Weirdest thing i ever ate...
Several i guess.
- lamb-brain with rice and yoghurt-sauce
- lamb-eye (in vodka-shot. Quite common on gotland, and island off the east coast of Sweden)
- Rotten fish (national dish in Sweden. Its called "surstromming" which translates to "sour-cob")
- Pigs feet (traditional christmas food for swedes)
- 4 karat gold (in a shot)
- loaf made of pigs bloodand flour (called bloodpudding in sweden)
Im part persian and part swedish so its really not that strange to me.
By part Persian
Submitted on June 2nd, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)do you mean Persian Cat? That might explain why you like pig's feet, etc.

I never had a brain, but:

The strangest thing I've eaten.....once!
Submitted on June 2nd, 2006 by wile_coyote (not verified)The strangest thing I've eaten once is a snack (like US hotdogs) sold by street vendors in the Philippines. It even showed up on an episode of Fear Factor. It's called balut. Basically it's a half developed duck egg that is bioled, then boilded some more. Nothing is more gross than to see veins in an egg, other than....hmm...maybe pulling a small beak or maybe an occasional foot out from between your teeth.
Yes, I ate this once....but ONLY once!

When I was a kid (a long time ago)
Submitted on June 3rd, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)I remember eating "kidneys and gravy"--I presume they were from a cow. There's no sophisticated way to say this but, while they were cooking/boiling, the house smelled like piss!!!! And they had to cook a long time...yuk. With gravy, the finished dish was quite good. I wonder, though, if I'd still like them now.
Ok I come from Iceland and I
Submitted on June 3rd, 2006 by Icelandic (not verified)Ok I come from Iceland and I can tell you that the people here eat pretty weird shit. Once a year there's a festival here where we eat all the old food people used to eat when there was hardly any food on this little island, and on that dish we have sour ram testicles, sheep head without the brain but my mother f.x. her favourite part are the eyes, also we eat rotten shark and many other things (I'm a very special Icelandic and I hate all that shit, it tastes terrible)
These Are VERY Interesting!

- Snails (cooked alive) - the little ones are the most delicious, everyone should try it and the best time to doi dit is from the end of April until the end of June;
- Pork ears and feet (Very, very good);
- Veal and lamb brains - There are some meals using these ingredients but not my favorites, definetly;
- Veal tripe - It's used on the most famous dish from Oporto (Tripas à moda do Porto) and is the dish after the Porto people are named (tripeiros);
The grossest food I ever ate
Submitted on June 4th, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)The grossest food I ever ate was snake. It was actually good, a bit like eel but chewier.
For me, the wackiest foods are some of the stuff here in America that they sell which are all sugar and chemicals. That to me is unappetizing.
I didn't think anyone criticized candy!!
Submitted on June 4th, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)I admit we have a lot of junk that is called candy, but I have a sweet tooth and must defend the sugar and chemicals.
I have also eaten pigs feet and think they are pretty good. I know of family members who eat tripe, but I've never tried it.
What I remember being gross was watching my elderly uncles and their friends try to outdo one another at a pig roast. They'd pop out an eyeball and squish it in their mouths and pick at the nose or whatever. Needless to say, they were intoxicated and didn't seem to care....they had a good time and were really laughing and rolling on the ground.
The pig itself was the most civilized.
Cow Tongue Ice Cream
Submitted on June 5th, 2006 by MichelleA new article about the gross flvours of ice cream in Japan.
"The cow tongue ice cream is a mixture of vanilla and beef broth with small red chunks of tongue."
You can read the rest at Yahoo
Thanks to Arboth for highlighting the article.
Now, I really do feel like puking.
in japan...
Submitted on June 5th, 2006 by andrew (not verified)the strangest food i have seen (note, not TRIED), is a whole cooked sparrow on a metal skewer. skull, beak, wings and all. the sauce actually smelt good but there was no way i could try it. it was psychological. watching the little skull with empty eye sockets, uh so creepy. apparently the way it is cooked makes the bones soft and pliable, but that didnt stop me hearing the occassional crunch.
the strangest food i have HEARD of... a friend of mine lived in thailand for 4 months.... he said he was freaked out by 1. fried spiders.... we all know fried grasshoppers but spiders? too freaky... and 2. still-beating snake heart. basically, they get a live snake, slit it open, remove the heart, and the idea is to consume it while its still beating... apparently it makes you powerful or something.... i think itd just make me sick :)

CaCa Coffee
Submitted on June 11th, 2006 by Scotty (not verified)Unless we got the story wrong, the weasel-coffee (chon is what I'd heard it as)
isn't regurgitated.. the beans are eaten by the weasels (traditionally civets,
but civets turn out to be too tasty themselves, locally, so with numbers down
they've switched over to weasels) which then.. process.. the beans naturally,
poop them out and then the droppings are collected and cleaned and the beans
are saved. The coffee ends up being some of the strongest stuff I've ever tasted
with a very musky sort of flavor, unsurprisingly. Almost a rich, chocolate/
liquory sort of taste. In Vietnam they serve it with sweetened milk. Man, that's
some good stuff.
For weird foods, by the by... avoid restaurants advertising 'thit cho'
(literally 'flesh dog') Not-so tender vittles
Gross Topic
Submitted on June 12th, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)It is interesting how this gross and disgusting topic got so many readers--over 40,000 and on its way to 50,000!
I don't think it takes much for all of us to unwittingly be eating something gross: the "All American" hotdog supposedly has all kinds of junk in it. I don't know about today, but I once read that some hot dogs had horse hooves and eyeballs in them. At least they still taste good!

Submitted on June 23rd, 2006 by Aaron (not verified)I'm from the States, i think the oddest thing I've had was Rabbit, i had it once at some expensive returant, it was really good!
Rabbit
Submitted on June 23rd, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)My father used to hunt rabbits in the 1960s-1970s, and I ate it when I was a child. I haven't had it in decades, but I remember that it was very good--it had a sweet taste to it. The worst part, though, was the stray BBs that were in it from the gunshot.
I wouldn't eat rabbit now. I used to have a pet Dutch bunny and the thought of eating a rabbit today is disgusting. Rabbits have gone from being food to being pets. We also see guinea pigs as pets, not sources of protein.
Not all that weird
Submitted on July 14th, 2006 by Chef (not verified)10) Squid ink is used in a pasta dish, and is considered a delicacy. I don't think it tastes all that strong though, if I remember correctly. I'd only say it'd be pukey if it had something like ribbons of frozen ink in the ice cream. As for the cow tongue ice cream, cow tongue is used for Japanese BBQ a lot and is pretty good (lots of green onions on top); the taste that tastes you back I say. When you eat it, it just looks like a circle of meat(does -not- look like a tongue at all), so there's no psychological problem there. In fact, I'm interested in that ice cream, mainly because I have a dream of making bacon ice cream some day.
9) Sounds fine - how different would it be from maple bacon or sausage? Is it just the color that puts you off?
8) Meh. Sounds fine. I mean, there's black licorice. How could this be nastier than that?
6) Well, lots of people put gold flakes in food too, and that's messed up(and wasteful).
5) You know there's the cat poop coffee, right? In some jungle-y place, there's a cat called the Luwak/Luak(or just civet cat) that "passes" coffee beans, which are then harvested. Apparently, the cats like to eat the best coffee beans(red 'n bright), but can't digest it. The process takes away some of the acidity and adds an "interesting" flavor to the coffee. Tough choice though - drinking coffee from bulemic weasels, or from cats with diarrhea?
I have a whole menu of "interesting" things from a specialty restaurant near my place in Taiwan - I'll post it someday...
Icelandic food ;)

The buck is called "hrúts pungur" the head we call "svið" dry fish "harðfiskur" and the jello is "sviðasulta",
and many people eat those half developed duck eggs "strokkuð egg"
I have only tasted the jello, dry fish and sheep head wich I loved when I was little (still love the fish ;) )

The chocolate covered bugs...
Submitted on August 1st, 2006 by Angel (not verified)I like chocolate-covered insects, although I'm more partial to crickets than roaches. But I also ate ants as a kid, so take that for what it's worth.
Lion, Hippo, Rattlesnake
Submitted on August 7th, 2006 by Suldog (not verified)Once worked a big-game hunter's dinner (as a roulette croupier - it was a "Monte Carlo" night, if you're familiar with those sorts of things) and we help were allowed to sample some of the gustatory delights prepared. Among them - steamship roast of hippo, braised lion, breaded and deep-fried rattlesnake, etc.
The hippo was actually quite good. Very similar to a good roast of beef. The lion was gamey. The rattlesnake was crunchy.
I couldn't bring myself to try any of the various insects being offered.

weird foods
Submitted on August 22nd, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)I have eaten snake (sidewinder), dog, cat, eel, crickets, grasshoppers, ants, giant maggots, monkey meat (including brains), Moose brains and eyeballs, many animal testicles, cheeses with mould (like blue cheese) and many other foods.
Many were good, some were bad.
It is only the way you were brought up that sets your limitations.
I will try almost anything.
The snake was very good!
I can pass on the giant maggots.
A funny note about this is that I don't like peanut butter.

Submitted on August 24th, 2006 by Moe (not verified)- Scorpions (cooked in a pan, the best of all the list, tastes a bit like a mix between shrimps and chicken)
- Ants (in coconut... it tasted like... coconut)
- Larvaes (cooked in a pan with peppers... spicy and surprisingly good!)
- Dried crickets (tastes like seeds or nuts (I guess they were salted), but crispier and flakier... Freak out your girlfriend with a leg stuck between your teeth... It worked to the point of regurgitation in my case... but my ex used to have quite a phobia about insects).
I ate all of this in an Insectarium which offered a "special lunch". Except for the ants that tasted like coconut (which I don't like much), the rest was absolutely delicious.
Pork Brains
Submitted on August 25th, 2006 by Steve S (not verified)I think the worst thing I've tried to eat is pork brains in milk gravy back in the early 1990's, and sold in a can by Armour here in the US. They were something like soft pulp, and I'll warn you- don't try to heat them in the microwave. They pop all over and make a mess. The taste isn't that great either. I'll also give a special mention to squid packed in its own ink (by Goya Foods), and haggus.
Are there Lavender Lifesavers Anywhere??
Submitted on August 25th, 2006 by Steve S (not verified)I forgot to ask in my previous post- does anyone know where they sell Lavender Lifesavers? I saw them advertised on an Aussie website and tried to order them about 5 years ago, but they emailed back saying they were no longer available! They even had a picture of a roll, as they do with all their items. I do like the Musk flavored, thought I'd try these too.

Chili
Submitted on September 5th, 2006 by Anonymous (not verified)Speaking of chili, my brother entered a chili contest at his office one year with a buddy. They went to the local chinese market and purchased duck's tounges, pork pancreas, etc. and whipped up a batch of chili that their co-workers just couldn't get enough of. They kept the source of the meat to themselves.
A have another friend that ran out of nacho's at a party he was throwing, so served Alpo (US Dog Food) to all his guests without telling them. He said they went quickly.
I've had aligator, frogs legs, cow tounge, cow face (barbacoa - mexican dish), rattlesnake, beef heart, beef kidneys, and beef and pork liver. All were good. I have not had my brother's chili, or Alpo nachos.
